“Excessive illumination obscures so many of life’s most beautiful dimensions, just as today’s excessive noise silences life’s subtlest and most beautiful signals”
What comes to mind when you think about noise?
Do you think of the dings and pings of your phone? The fire truck blasting it’s horn out your window? Or perhaps, it’s the noise in your mind? Sensory overload. Human instincts warped by constant interruption and an endless feed of news or short-form attention grabbing slop.
What might be the antithesis of noise?
Is it quiet? Peace? Music? Focus? When does sound become noise? And who’s responsible for that shift? Might we blame the source of the sound, or are we, the witness and meaning making machines, responsible?
We use headphones to cancel noise, machines to create it… What’s your relationship with noise right now?
Challenges
If you need some inspiration or just a little nudge, try exploring by:
Taking a walk and paying attention to every sound… the squish of your shoes against mud, the birds, the people, the silence. What do you notice? What did this moment offer to you?
Creating a noise log. Record some snippets in your daily routines. From the stillest silence to the striking sounds: your alarm clock ticking, inner monologue check-list, brushing your teeth, showering, singing in the shower, making your breakfast, getting on a crowded bus, talking to friends, etc. What noises are in abundance, which ones are you missing?
Starting a voice memo, describe the noise around you, and how it makes you feel?
Drawing the noises in and around you. What shape do they have, what color(s), what texture?

FAQ’s
What is an exploration?
A period of reflection and or creation centered on a question or concept. During this period we invite you to make something… Anything! Write some words, draw a picture, interview a friend, make a video, write a song, etc.… How you choose to explore and what you create is up to you. Feel free to interpret wildly and widely.
What happens with my submission?
All submissions sent our way will be displayed on the website. You are welcome to stay anonymous and if you ever change your mind you can ask us to remove your entry!
What’s the point of participating?
That’s for you to decide! It’s an unreasonable invitation…. To spend time on something for no material reward? Why might you want to make time for such a thing?
